designboom history: #1 foam hand

geral fauss with his first #1 hand prototype - image © designboom
our latest history article features the story of the #1 foam hand invented by the former high
school teacher, geral fauss in 1978. since then it has become a universal symbol for the
phrase 'we're number one' and is among the most popular pieces of US sports merchandising.

1978 #1 hand protoypes
L: the first #1 hand made from plywood - too heavy!
R: layered card prototype hand - too fragile!
'students rallied around the team and kept a fevered pitch during the playoffs. I knew that
they wanted something 'big' to show their spirit.....so I thought , why not a large hand sign.'
GF

variations of the foam hand
'my first venture into selling the #1 hands was at the 1978 cotton bowl game. the university
of texas was playing notre dame. I hand cut the #1 hands out of plywood, painted them white,
and used an orange board-marker to hand draw graphics on every hand - they were actually
very professional looking.' GF

digital technology and the museum experience

designer leonardo bonanni recently went on vacation, visiting some of the top museums in europe.
on his travels he realized the profound impact of digital technology on the museum-going experience.
you have probably seen or even used the digital tour guides before. many of these tour-aids have
also become more advanced over time, citing the louvre’s tour device. bonanni recorded the
behaviours he observed as visitors tried to use these devices and others. he also provides some
insight on the most appropriate ways to augment the experience. a very compelling set of
observations on the current way digital technology mediates the museum experience.
every tourist in paris seems to have a little digital camera with which they must photograph
the mona lisa. why? to prove that they saw it, or, more likely, to see it at all, since the barricade
that protects the diminutive tableau forces most people to see it from several meters away.
it’s not the best way to interact with art, but it is more than intuitive - people seem driven to do it.

urban split-level house by qb3

the split-level is a classic american design which emerged out of the post-war housing boom.
more than 50 years later, philadelphia based design studio qb is re-inventing the form in an
urban context with their split-level house on a vacant corner in the city’s northern liberties
neighbourhood. each floor flows into the next in typical split-level fashion, linking the street
to the house and all the way up to a rooftop garden. the house is currently under construction

balloon installation series by sinem erkas and rose clark
balloon installation series is a collaboration between sinem erkas and rose clark.
using balloons as their medium of choice, they produced a portable photography set
in which they shot the series. here, the model is no longer the centre of attention.
instead she disappears into her surroundings as the balloons take the stage,
enveloping her. the series was produced for a spread in exit magazine.

marc quinn at fiac through galerie hopkins-custot

marc quinn
galerie hopkins-custot at fiac
paris, france
october 23-26, 2008
to mark their debut at fiac, paris' largest art fair, galerie hopkins-custot is presenting
the work of english artist marc quinn. the show is being prepared by the artist as a
dialogue. quinn will be selecting pieces of his own work as well as artworks which
have served as sources of inspiration. representing quinn's recent work are the
flower paintings, the kate moss sphinx series, skeletons, marble fetuses and his
most recent plant sculptures, which were created especially for this event.
accompanying these pieces are works by brueghel, picasso and giacometti, as well
as examples of indian and ancient egyptian art.
flesh, blood, excrement, the human skeleton, animal carcasses and DNA as an
information storage system are among quinn's favorite subjects; but they give rise
to intensely meaningful expressive forms using the eternal perfection of white marble,
pharmaceutical products, wax suffused with blood, and cryogenically frozen flowers.
